White Paper: Driving Standards Development with Cognitive Rigor 3-D

by John R. Walkup, Ph.D.

In a white paper titled "Driving Standards Development with Cognitive Rigor 3-D", I introduce Cognitive Rigor 3-D, which incorporates the Knowledge Dimension of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy as a third dimension to the existing two-component Cognitive Rigor model.

The result produces three matrices:
  1. Cognitive Rigor Matrix (also called the Hess Matrix)
  2. Anderson-Krathwohl Matrix (from the seminal book on Bloom's Revised Taxonomy)
  3. KD/DK Matrix
The third matrix listed was introduced in another blog article. I will ponder its future utility later.

I then discuss in the white paper how Cognitive Rigor 3-D can potentially play an important role in new standards development.

Finally, I open the possibility for students and parents to play important roles in standards development, even allowing individual schools and school districts to create their own standards based on state-adopted models.
